Dueling Prayers
Just outside my window
Hangs a bird-feeder, a treat
For all the tired and hungry birds
To stop by, rest and eat.
The feeder's white, gazebo-shaped,
With sunflower seeds inside;
And feathered friends of various hues
All gather there with pride.
But underneath the feeder
Lurks a patient, stealthy cat;
She prays for prey for hours on end,
A hiding acrobat.
She knows one leap into the air
Can catch a careless bird;
("Invisible" ~ without a sound,
She whispers not a word.)
And so I sit, unseen by her,
And while I watch, I pray ~
("Invisible" ~ without a sound)
She'll not succeed this day!
