Mortality's Illusion

O reality, I see thy face
Which I am now forced to see
          Emerging from behind illusions,
I have so long carried with me.
          Through triumph and disaster,
          I've sought long and hard
To fight truth, face it not
To do meant lowering a guard
          That like a protective wall
          Sweet illusion, enveloping me
          Caused me to obstinately refuse
          To face my immortality
          Armed with that misconception,
I went on, sure and unafraid
Why should I ever spare a thought
When my life would never fade?
          Countless years stretched before me
Like endless waves of the sea,
          Laboring under a misapprehension
So long I could not see.
At last forced to face the truth
          Alone and at deaths feet
With tide ebbing, death knell calling,
My Creator I am to meet.
turn the tide, go back in time!
I plead with God, to no avail,
The voice replies my precious child
          The ship has set sail!
