The Pristine Delight of This Snowy Night
Perhaps God gave us the purity and shining beauty of the snow to remind
us of Himself in His glory, and of the beauty of the city where He will
live with His people in eternity.
"Have you entered into the treasures of the snow?"
God asked of the man Job.
No prancing hoofs of vigilant deer,
nor frisky puppy paws,
have yet defiled the purity of the virgin snow;
no stealthy step of prowling cat,
delicately lifting nimble feet
as he dances silently in the night,
seeking a sheltered place to shake
intrusive flakes from his satiny slippers.
When the light of day washes
over the landscape,
blending with the lustrous sheen
of diamond-sprinkled snow,
time will awaken the necessity
of clearing a path,
shoveling a driveway,
digging out a parking spot.
As we doggedly battle the elements,
striving for the privilege
of waging another day's
struggle for significance,
we'll trudge through drifts,
bemoaning the inconvenience befallen
on a world of men and women
as driven as this midwinter's snowfall.
But for now,
in this pre-dawn scene
of iridescent splendor,
revel in the treasure of the snow
as it reminds us of a day yet to come,
when all things will be made new,
and life with God will bring unending,
unblemished delight
to those who dwell with Him.
