You Call That Gratitude?
Gratitude flows from praising lips
Appreciation, a flag unfurled
Never missing a chance to thank
Yeah - only in a perfect world
We are a most ungrateful lot
We find fault with feigned offenses
From store clerk to fellow drivers
We scowl, raising our defenses
We’re certain life is so unfair
So many examples to cite
The drive-thru, movie theater,
The traffic signal late at night
Nothing resembles perfection
And believe me we are looking
From our next door noisy neighbors
To mama’s holiday cooking
And our Savior looks on weeping
For there’s so much we just don’t see
The pain and hurt that we’ve been spared
The shadowed gift upon a tree
How can we have such arrogance?
Why should we voice such loud complaint?
Our pain can never be compared
To the suffering His life paints
So today instead of concern
Because someone just cut us off
We’ll offer up a word of praise
We’ll think and whisper thanks so soft
We live in a world of passion
Irritability is the norm
We can choose just how we’ll respond
As Jesus love in us is formed
Gratitude flows from praising lips
Appreciation, a flag unfurled
Never missing a chance to thank
Following One not of this world
